US electricity companies have submitted requests to their state regulators for rate increases that, if approved, would generate additional revenue of around $29 billion per year. The electricity companies cite the need to invest in order to meet growing demand linked to the development of artificial intelligence and data centres. The question is how the increase will be distributed among consumers, particularly residential customers. Representatives of small consumers would like to see investments in network upgrades and new power plants financed by data centre operators.
