Denmark, which takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July, wants to reach an agreement with the European Parliament in the autumn on a ban on Russian gas imports. The proposal for a ban, put forward by the European Commission, has been welcomed by a majority of Member States. The Commission wants to ban the signing of new contracts for Russian gas imports from the end of 2025 and create the legal conditions to terminate existing long-term contracts by the end of 2027. The Commission is due to publish a study on the impact of the ban in the coming days.
