CRE nuances the responsibility of renewable energies in the modulation of EDF's nuclear fleet
According to the French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), the modulation of the nuclear fleet is the result of economic optimisation on the part of EDF, and the volumes involved are of the same order of magnitude as those observed in the past. CRE considers that EDF chooses to reduce its nuclear output for a whole series of reasons, such as saving fuel between two reactor shutdowns or depending on market prices. The idea that solar production is constraining the output of the nuclear fleet therefore needs to be qualified. According to CRE, the volume of power variations in the fleet reached 26.5 TWh in 2024. But this same volume reached 39.5 TWh in 1994, when the nuclear fleet was overcapacitated.
