Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to build three 500 MW capacity batteries
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners is to build three batteries, each with a capacity of 500 MW. The first battery is due to come on stream in October 2025, with the other two batteries due to come on stream in 2027-2028. Together, the three batteries will be able to store 1.5 GW for 2 hours, delivering 3 GWh of energy. In Europe, installed capacity for large-scale batteries remains limited, standing at 10.8 GW at the end of 2024, including 4.5 GW in the UK.
By 2030, 60% of the electricity generated in the UK will be wind-generated, a third of which will be produced in Scotland. Grid constraints, which at certain times make it impossible to export the electricity generated outside Scotland, make the installation of batteries particularly attractive at a time when the cost of batteries is falling.
