CO2 emissions to fall by 20% in Germany by 2023
CO2 emissions in Germany will fall by 20% in 2023 to 673 million tonnes, their lowest level since the 1950s. The fall in emissions is linked to a fall in industrial production and a reduction in the use of coal for electricity generation, in roughly equivalent proportions. The drop in production in electro-intensive industries (chemicals, metallurgy, cement, etc.) has reached 11% by 2023.
Half of the electricity produced in Germany comes from renewable sources. Renewable electricity production rose by 5% last year.
