China sets cautious targets for reducing CO2 emissions

China wants to reduce its carbon intensity (CO2 emissions relative to GDP) by 17% by 2030. This target should be compared with the one set out in the previous five-year plan, which aimed for an 18% reduction in carbon intensity by 2025, a target that was not achieved. The Chinese Prime Minister wants coal consumption to start declining in 2030 and China to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. China's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 0.3% in 2025. Coal is responsible for half of the 12 billion tonnes of CO2 emitted by China annually.
