Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, the UK's leading residential electricity and natural gas supplier, has seen the amount of unpaid bills rise by 82%, from £297 million in December 2022 to £541 million in December 2023. The rise in energy prices, in a more general context of falling purchasing power, is affecting the ability of British households to pay their energy bills. While energy prices have fallen in 2023, consumer protection measures have also ended, leaving poorer consumers even more exposed.
