Coal-fired power generation fell 11% in the first half

Coal-fired power generation in the United States fell 11% in the first half of 2026 compared with 2025. The decline is set to continue in the coming years, though probably at a more moderate pace, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Coal's share of the American power mix has dropped from 52% in 1990 to 17% in 2025. The slide reflects both policy considerations and the competitiveness of gas and renewables. Gas remains competitive against coal as long as its price stays below USD 3.50/MMBtu — it currently trades at USD 3.20/MMBtu, pushed higher by the war in Iran.
